Our Lasting Legacy

As Civitans we often talk about the three principals our organization incorporates; Service, Knowledge and Fellowship. The founders of Civitan International wisely chose these principals because in even today they are essential in fulfilling the Civitan mission and role of a Civitan club in the community.

The essence of Service is that Civitan members, like you working through your local club, identify community needs and work to fill them. At the same time, many Civitans collectively focus their major emphasis on projects designed to assist people with mental and developmental disabilities. Programs like the Civitan International Research Center; local, regional and state Special Olympics games; fresh air camps; the Association for Retarded Citizens; and special education classes.

But there are many other ways local clubs provide service to their community needs. Civitans have built parks, zoos, athletic fields and recreation centers. They have purchased school buses, fire trucks, vans and ambulances. They help sponsor group homes, blood drives, drug awareness campaigns, abused families' support groups and outings for underprivileged children.

Knowledge, the second principle, is provided to a member through learning more about their community through club programs, community involvement and networking with fellow members. The district and international levels of Civitan also offer programs throughout the year where you may continue to increase your knowledge and understanding of the world around you.

And the third principal, Fellowship, is a universal truth that people are better able and more willing to work with others when they enjoy the rapport and camaraderie of each others' company. Or to put it another way, we all find it easier to work with our friends than with strangers.

These three principals --- Service, Knowledge and Fellowship ---- collectively form the basis of everything we do in Civitan. Without service, your club simply becomes a social club. Without fellowship, service becomes legalistic drudgery. Without knowledge, there is no anchor for issues or community understanding.
