There are many family-oriented activities in Ottawa, Ontario, when you and your family visit next summer for the annual Civitan International Convention. The dates are July 20-23 at the Westin Hotel in the heart of the metropolis.
Cattle, sheep, pigs, and draft horses are featured at the Canada Agriculture Museum. Canada Aviation Museum features a premiere collection of aeronautics. Nearly 120 aircraft and exhibits are on display. Science and technology are featured at the Canada Science and Technology Museum with exhibits on energy, computers, communications, land, and space travel. Explore 1000 years of Canada history at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. If pictures are your bag, try the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography with works by some of the country's most talented photographers. From grizzly bears to gems, from tiny insects to dinosaurs, the Canadian Museum of Nature has it all.
For something different, there is the Canadian War Museum which tells the real-life stories of the men and women who have defended the country. Explore its three floors of exhibits. Or how about Cumberland Heritage Village, the recreation of a rural village between 1890 and 1935. More than 20 buildings with costumed interpreters, farm animals, and a picnic shelter await your visit. The National Archives of Canada hold the memories of the nation in free exhibits. Diaries, photos, maps, art, and film are on display.
For a change of pace visit the Royal Canadian Mint to see $1 million in pure gold! Learn how coins are made and browse the boutique for a souvenir.
Enthusiastic families who love the outdoors will love the city's hiking and biking trails, parks, rivers, and lakes. And there are bike and canoe rental stores to make the whole trip convenient.
Don't forget to include the canal in your family plans. The longest skating rink in the world is great fun in the winter. In summer, when Civitans visit, you can enjoy events like paddle boating, canoeing, or a boat tour on what is sure to be a fine summer day.
In 2002 Ottawa welcomed the Canadian Football League back to the Capital Region. The Ottawa Renegades call Lansdowne Park home. The Civic Centre is home to the Ottawa Rebel Lacrosse Team, Canada's official National Sport.
Ottawa is also home to the Ottawa Lynx AAA Baseball Club. The Lynx offer an exciting evening of outdoor entertainment at JetForm Park, minutes from downtown. The Lynx are the TripleA affiliate of the Montreal Expos, and the stadium is Ottawa's best outdoor concert venue.
