A Vision That Became A Reality

The Research Center opened in 1990 and quickly earned worldwide recognition for its complete, interdisciplinary approach towards the treatment and prevention of mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD), as well as for its groundbreaking advancements in related research.

Since its dedication in 1992, the Civitan International Research Center has gained enthusiastic acceptance from the scientific and academic worlds, and now employs more than 300 scientists, clinicians, students, interns, residents, fellows and staff from across the United States and from around the world representing 40 specialty areas.

While a portion of the Civitan International Research Center is devoted strictly to research into the causes and prevention of MR/DD, the other main focus of the Research Center is to provide treatment to those affected by these conditions. The Sparks Clinics complex, the Research Center's clinical treatment facility, is comprised of an extensive range of interdisciplinary clinics that provide comprehensive diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the needs of children and adults with MR/DD. Faculty, students and staff representing many different disciplines apply their skills in a collaborative manner, ensuring that clients receive state-of-the art evaluations and well-rounded assessments of their individual needs.

There is a total cross-utilization of facilities, equipment, personnel, and programs among the various clinics and centers. This integrated approach is the major strength and unique feature of the Research Center.
