Junior Civitan

Reaching out to youth and working with today's young people is an on-going project for many Civitan clubs. Each year over 500,000 young people are involved in a Civitan sponsored activity from scouting to citizenship seminars. Civitan clubs take great pride in supporting young people through a multitude of projects and programs.

Junior Civitan, the oldest and most successful program of Civitan International, is a community service organization for young people. Junior Civitans help others, particularly those with developmental disabilities, assist those less fortunate, and promote environmental and drug abuse awareness. Generally, Junior Civitans improve their schools and communities through service to others.

Junior Civitan International has more than 500 clubs in North America, Europe, and Africa. These 17,000 members are committed to improving the world and the lives of those less fortunate.

Junior Civitans not only help other people, but they have a great time doing it. By working together, Junior Civitans learn the importance of teamwork and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

There are opportunities for fun and fellowship on all levels of Junior Civitan. Clubs hold regular meetings and projects in which members are in contact with each other.

Districts have meetings and projects in which members from different clubs are involved. Sometimes two or more districts will hold a project in which case, Junior Civitans from a wide area will gather for fun.

The annual Junior Civitan International Convention brings together Junior Civitans to share in leadership workshops and a weekend of fun and fellowship.

Junior Civitan is more than just a community service organization. It is a place where lifetime friendships are made and long-lasting values are learned. From the local club to the international organization, Junior Civitan is dedicated to improving the world for everyone, including its members.

Junior Civitan clubs are involved in many outstanding projects. District, individual, and club accomplishments are recognized each year by Junior Civitan International. Recognitions such as District of the Year, Junior Civitan of the Year, President of the Year, and Club of the Year are among the many awards presented during the international convention. To be acknowledged as the best among all the projects and individual achievements for the year is an outstanding recognition and tremendous honor.

Junior high, middle school, high school, and community Junior Civitan clubs are sponsored by adult Civitan clubs. Junior clubs may be all female, all male or coeducational. These clubs are sponsored by adult Civitan clubs wishing to work with young people. Members must be full-time students under 19 years of age.

Junior Civitan is a service club for young people tailored specifically for training young people to become "Builders of Good Citizenship" in the home, school, community, and nation. Its purpose is to develop initiative and leadership and to encourage youth to live a fuller life enriched by unselfish service to others, focusing upon daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships by precept and example.

The objectives of Junior Civitan are inbred in the organization's precepts of service, knowledge, and fellowship.
o To practice and promote good citizenship in the home, school, community, and nation.
o To promote high standards of scholarship and conduct in the school.
o To serve the school, community, and nation.
o To support good government on all levels and encourage respect for the law.
o To develop leadership through unselfish service.
o To practice the Golden Rule.

Junior Civitan also has its own creed which was written by its members. It embodies the ideals of the organization: service, knowledge, and fellowship.

                         Junior Civitan Creed

                          I am a Junior Civitan:
                         An aware citizen of today,
                         The standing promise of tomorrow.

I seek to meet the needs of our world,
To be progressive in a world of change
                         With compassion and understanding for
The values and traditions of the past.

I value the security of knowing
                         That wherever I am
I will always be within reach
                        Of a fellow Civitan.

                         I dedicate myself
To society and to my fellow man
                        With a commitment
To make the world a better place.

These are the basics. But, that's not all; Junior Civitan has a lot more to offer.

Junior Civitan is enriching the lives of today's young people and developing tomorrow's leaders.
