Hotel rooms, cabins, campsites, etc are available on first come basis. Make your reservations early! Cost of lodging will depend on your choice: Regular Room – 2 Queen beds - $ 89.00 per night King Room – 1 King bed - $ 96.00 per night Cabin – two bedroom - $ 110.00 per night Add 10% tax plus $3.00 per room per day city service tax. Limit 1-2 persons per room. Children under 12 in rooms are no extra charge; extra adults are $10 each in a room. Two of our newest projects are The Cahaba River Cleanup and Vidalia Onion projects.
Cahaba River Cleanup
The Cahaba River Cleanup (or CRC as we call it) has been a successful service project for our community. Dozens of workers have taken canoes down sections of the Cahaba River and have removed trash, tires, metal, and many other items from the water. By doing this, we believe we have improved the quality of the water that is a source of drinking water and recreation. And more importantly, we have tried to maintain its beauty and have a lot of fun doing so.
This community service event has grown from workers in ten to twenty canoes to having about 300 workers in seventy, eighty, even up to a hundred plus canoes. The work has grown from a three to five mile section of the river to now working a ten-mile section. Starting in 2004, we had workers of all ages, including families, scouts, Jr. Civitans and folks just wanting to serve their community. Then in 2005, the project became an Alabama Central District project and Civitans from all over the District came out to "help clean" The Cahaba River.
Each year the project changes locations. The idea being to clean as much as we can up and down the river using what resources we have. At one such cleanup, in a ten-mile section of the river over 175 tires and a huge amount of debris was pulled out of the river to fill up 2-commerical roll-off dumpsters! Vidalia Onion Project
We started this project in 2007 and clubs in
Alabama Central District sold over 1000 ten pound bags of Sweet Vidalia
Onions. In 2008, we added a few more participating clubs and more than

While
on a business trip in 1951, Civitan Earl Carver stopped by a small
bakery in Claxton, Georgia. He purchased a loaf of the bakery's fruit
cake. It was so good, he purchased others to take home to Florida. He
got the idea of his club selling the cake to raise money for projects.
His club liked the idea and the sample cakes.

Old-fashioned help for people with disabilities
You can't download it. You can't tweet it. You can't become a "friend" of it on Facebook, and you share it on a blog ... well, maybe you can. The Press-Register in Mobile, Alabama today reported on one of those traditional, non-trendy fundraisers that still helps thousands of people in our country through a simple, sweet incentive - a piece of candy (http://blog.al.com/living-press-register/2009/06/donations_are_down_at_civitan.html). Civitan's Candy Boxes, and newer Coin Boxes, have been around for decades. The bright blue plastic containers are placed by Civitan members in restaurants, bars and businesses everywhere to help raise money for local projects that help people with developmental disabilities, and provide support for the UAB Civitan International Research Center. Cottage Hill Civitans use their local funds to support a team of weightlifters with special needs at the Augusta Evans School, and sponsor children to the United Cerebral Palsy summer camp - but Civitans around the country provide support in many different ways. Next time you see a candy box, put a dollar in. You won't have to send an email or use your credit card, but you will enjoy the sweet taste of helping others.

Civitan
Civitan, a worldwide community service organization, was founded in 1917 by a group of businessmen in Birmingham, Alabama who began meeting weekly to discuss how they could improve their community. Civitan International was established three years later in 1920. The Alabama Central District is also known as the "Mother District" as it includes Birmingham, Alabama, the birthplace of Civitan.
